Extrusions 101

Plastic profile extrusion is a continuous process of heating raw materials, usually in a form a pellets, while pushing the plastic through a die. The heating process takes place inside of a piece of equipment called an extruder. The extruder has a hopper, and barrel with a screw inside of the barrel. The plastic is loaded into the hopper that is located at one end of the barrel. The plastic is then fed into the barrel where it is heated up to the desired processing temperature while being pushed down the barrel by the screw. An extrusion die is located at the end of the barrel that forms the plastic into the desired shape. The plastic is then cooled and cut to a specified length.

Creative excels in custom plastic profile extrusion that uses from one to five different materials. The process of using multiple materials in an extruded part is commonly referred to as co-extrusion. Creative extrudes ABS, Ionomers, PE, PP, PVC, TPO, TPR, TPV, TPU and other plastic materials in the plastic profile extrusion process.

Creative also specializes in post extrusion fabrication. This is where a length of extrusion can be bent, cut, notched or combined with other extrusions or components. This capability allows Creative’s customer to have more design freedom to achieve their goals.

Plastic profile extrusion is used to make many different items including household window frames, automotive trims, closeouts, seals, guides and many others.
